Summer Has Left the Oven on and Now We’re Overdone

It’s too hot out

For September

***

I want to yell

Sweat pooling down my back

As I write these words

Triple digit days

Belong to July

Or maybe even August

Not September

***

Summer and fall have collided

A mismatched mashup

Both trying to stake their claim

Vibrant oranges and reds

Decorate both tomatoes and trees

Locked in competition

To be King of September

***

Instead of going gracefully

The fiery passion of summer rages on

Refusing to give up

As Halloween decorations

Replace back to school bargains

Even Halloween Spirit

Knows it’s September

***

Summer has left the oven on

And now we’re overdone

The sky a smoky orange

From too many wildfires

Old brick buildings bake

Bright little minds

Because they weren’t built for summer

And it’s too smoky to open windows

Bright big minds send them home early

Where our little window AC

Keeps the house a nice 75°

Schools closed for inclement weather

In September

***

What offering is needed

To assuage summer’s simmering anger?

I’ll gladly give it!

If I sit out in your heat

Waxing poetical

Would you lower your temperature?

If I sit with you and listen

Will the fight burn out of you?

I welcome your embrace!

Two hours I have been in your hot hug

I’d say that’s worth 20 degrees at least

Maybe we can compromise

On an 80° September?
